Ready to pick up your paddles and try out something new? With a 21.3% increase in players in 2020, pickleball has quickly become America’s fastest-growing sport. Using a badminton-sized court with a slightly lowered net, pickleball plays very similar to tennis, except with a square paddle and a perforated plastic ball. From its ease to learn to desirable health benefits, country clubs across the nation have adopted the sport into their facilities. Keeping up with the popularity of this booming sport, Willoughby Golf Club recently added two new pickleball courts to its racquet program. Find out how Willoughby Members are enjoying this new sport and the social opportunities they bring.
Willoughby’s Newest Pickleball Addition
Opened in November 2021, Willoughby Golf Club recently added two pickleball courts to their racquet facilities. These fully lit courts have already become a favored activity, keeping Members energetic with play both day and night. The courts are a welcomed addition to the pre-existing racquet facilities, which includes five Har-Tru clay tennis courts.
Director of Racquet Sports at Willoughby Golf Club, Jimmy Dunseith, is looking forward to all the ways these court additions will bring residents together. “Any time the Club adds a new amenity for Members, it’s exciting. I believe that it will increase Member engagement and club participation. That’s what we are trying to do here at the Racquets Department – create more opportunities to keep our Members active and engaged.”
Upcoming Pickleball Events
Thanks to a robust calendar of social events, beginners and pickleball professionals alike relish the addition of these new courts. Willoughby hosts numerous weekly clinics and open play days that help introduce new players to the sport. For those looking for a challenge, Willoughby is a part of three different teams within the Treasure Coast Pickleball League. Guest days, Club Championships, social events, and even more are being planned, ensuring that Members have ample opportunities to try out the new sport.
“Our Members are extremely passionate and supportive of both our tennis and pickleball programs, and just want to have a good time,” said Dunseith. “We really have a great membership, and that makes it so enjoyable to come to work.”
An Active, Social Lifestyle
Not only are Willoughby’s racquet facilities one of a kind, but the community and private club lifestyle make life at Willoughby unique. Our private, member-owned golf club is also home to an 18-hole Arthur Hills designed championship golf course, as well as a 25,000 square foot Clubhouse with member and guest dining, social lounges, a resort-style pool, and a fitness center.
